about

My father, Bob Joelson, was a truly remarkable man. A superb physician with a caring and a generous heart, he was also a talented actor, writer, photographer, and musician. Inspired by Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, and Tom Paxton, among others, he took guitar lessons from Jerry Silverman and became deeply engaged in the Sing Out! Folk Movement in the 1960’s. I was fortunate to grow up listening to my father play so many iconic songs from the folk tradition, and he in turn became my first guitar teacher when I was a teenager. I have now been singing these songs for more than a half-century, and I sorely miss the times when we would play them together. With deep love and affection, I dedicate this album to my father. His memory continues to be a source of inspiration to me.

Songs My Father Taught Me grew from a dream to a reality due to the steadfast and patient collaboration of Jim Henry, amazing musician, producer, and dear friend. I am also indebted to the wonderful group of musicians who lent their prodigious talents to this project. Words are inadequate to express my admiration and appreciation to them all.
